Post-earthquake IC industry: TSMC recovered over 80%

4/8/2024

The three major DRAM original manufacturers have suspended quotations, which may be a signal for price increases after the earthquake.

According to the Science and Technology Innovation Board Daily, citing the China Taiwan Electronic Times, the storage supply chain pointed out that three major DRAM manufacturers successively announced the suspension of quotations following the earthquake in Taiwan, China.

In addition to Micron, whose main DRAM production capacity is based in Taiwan, SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics, etc. have also suspended quotations to wait and see the impact of subsequent production capacity supply. Memory module manufacturers also subsequently stopped quotations. According to industry analysis, based on the recent attitude of memory manufacturers to continue to raise prices, the suspension of quotations by the three original manufacturers may be a signal for price increases. The impact is expected to be apparent shortly and affect the contract price trend in the second quarter.

TSMC’s wafer fab equipment has recovered over 80%, maintaining revenue growth expectations

According to the China Taiwan Business Times, after the earthquake on the 3rd, TSMC issued important announcements for three days in a row, stating that the overall recovery rate of wafer fab equipment has exceeded 80%, and emphasized that the full-year performance outlook remains the same as the one held at the meeting in January. Annual revenue growth is expected to be in the low to mid-twenties. It is worth noting that in the fourth quarter of last year, TSMC’s products accounted for 43% of revenue, and high-performance computing equaled that of smartphones, becoming the twin engines of operational growth.

The legal person pointed out that TSMC’s advanced process technology and yield rate lead the industry, and it is the main target for most international customers. It is estimated that the market share of 5 nanometers is about 70%-80%, and the market share of 3 nanometers will exceed 90% in one fell swoop, covering almost all companies. Major manufacturers, TSMC, have also emphasized many times that HPC is also an important application in the future, in addition to well-known mobile phone applications for advanced processes. This means that HPC demand will also support the off-season for smartphone chips in the second quarter.

Samsung raises SSD prices by up to 25%

According to relevant reports cited by Kuai Technology, Samsung Electronics raised the price of enterprise SSDs by 20%-25% in the second quarter of this year, mainly due to the surge in market demand. The originally planned price increase was 15%, but apparently the growth in market demand exceeded expectations, so the price increase was expanded.

At the same time, according to a report by research firm TrendForce, the price of consumer-grade SSDs is also expected to rise again, with the increase expected to be between 10-15%. The formation of this trend is mainly due to the continued impact of upstream production cuts and the decline in supplier inventory levels. Although the purchase volume of NAND flash memory in the second quarter was slightly lower than that in the first quarter, the contract price of flash memory is still expected to continue to rise.
